OBs were due to play Saracens at home a week ago in the semi-final of the Charles Saunders Food Services Bristol Combination Vase, but the game was postponed due to the cold weather. To ease downstream fixture congestion, OBs conceded home advantage and the league game was made a double header.
The heavy rain cleared before kick off and OBs kicked off playing down the slope. The tone of the day was set early with a clever kick in the corner from scrum half Tom Sellers leading to a push over try for number 8 Gareth Graham. Fly half Jack Price kicked the conversion.
Saracens hit back with a very well taken try by the left winger, but the conversion proved to be the last points Saracens would score.
A close range try by Jack Price, another push over try by Gareth Graham and a try from wing Steve Forster ensured the try bonus point was secured in the first half. Jack landed two of the conversions.
OBs scored two second half tries through prop Nick Cussen and wing Garth Hannaford, with Jack kicking two penalties and two conversions.
Whilst the attacking side of the OBs play was accurate, the defensive display was the foundation for the win. Tackles were being made behind the gain line and this often resulted in a turn over.
OBs welcome second place Drybrook to Failand on Saturday.
The Charles Saunders Food Services Bristol Combination Cup Vase Final is due to take place on 5th April at Clifton RFC, where OBs will play either Bishopston or Southmead.
