With mixed emotions, the club would like to announce that Rich Berry and Tristan Fowler are handing over the baton from their respective roles. They have both been key in driving the club and who are standing down after brilliant innings across many leadership roles.
Rich has been with the club for 50 years; 1st XV captain for 5 seasons, 5 years as Chairman and then succeeding his late, great father Jim to serve for an incredible 25 years as President. In this time the club has transformed, with the seniors rising up the leagues to the top level of English amateur rugby, and expanding to now boast one of the largest and most successful Minis and Junior sections in the region.
It is fair to say that the club’s success would not have happened without him at the helm, across the roles above and too many others to list – winning recognition at the GRFU, The Bears and wider RFU levels for his contribution to rugby. We’re delighted to say that his involvement as a Director of the OBs Sports Club will continue to see through the development of the clubhouse facilities as a further lasting legacy to his great tenure. He further continues his contribution to rugby and the community in his ongoing work as Safeguarding Lead at Bristol Bears, and as an educational consultant specialising in school leadership & developing teams; understanding SEMH & SEND; safeguarding & Mental Health First Aid.
Tristan has been at the club for 21 years, captained the mighty league-winning 2nd XV, served as Club Captain for 5yrs and this has been his 10th year as Seniors Chairman. On and off the pitch he has helped drive the club’s recent growth – and importantly its relationship with Young Lives vs Cancer (formerly Clic Sargent), continuing Robbie Stuart’s legacy through feats like rowing the channel to help raise well over a quarter of a million pounds – an important and continuing part of the club’s values and impact. He will continue in a Senior Player role at Old Bristolians as he hands over the reins in the 26/27 season, with the club's ambition to top the leagues.
They both leave the club in good health; 100 years old but going strong - having won the Bristol Combination Cup for the first time this century, and with well over 500 players across the Seniors, Vets, juniors and minis. Bravo.
