March sometimes provides the very best climate for rugby, as the sun returns, the weather warms but the ground hasn't yet hardened. That said a year ago to the day we were cancelling games due to snow. Anyway, in the bright sunshine the 2s turned out with a decent crowd watching to enjoy some fast-paced KBA play.
Early on, we (well Cullen) managed to pirouette his way to try-butchery, as the young ref ruled his effort held up. Happily, however this was one of the few that got away as, despite the opposition never giving up putting a spirited defence, the score line mounted steadily. Matt Law crossed in the corner after some concerted pressure, and Higgsy was unlucky to be stopped on a few sharp runs.
The day further conspired against our visitors when a high tackle on our retiring Doctor reduced their numbers, and our Captain Morgan crossed soon after again in the corner, showing how the whole team had been using the full width of the pitch to stretch the defence.
Second half cam around, with a cheerful chat presumably consisting of suggesting we continue to do more of the same.
The next try came from the retiring man himself, this time courtesy of a ghosting through the middle. Curiously the oppo seemed to pick him out with the restart, which didn't end terribly well for them, as Badcock linked with the backs ending in Johnny crossing the line.
At this point the ball started to find Smarty a number of times, who seemed keen to have his share of the showing off silky running and soft hands. With Louis lurking handsomely on the wing (his split seam shorts attracting admiring chat from the lady fans) some great back and forth between Louis and Paul led to another great KBA try.
It wasn't all attack though - around this time Aeroplane rallied with good heart, and came close to scoring - with their front row breaking through the line to be hauled down by Johnny but set up some good attacking play. Some big hits from Paff and Louis and chops from Andrew and others kept them out, and the OBs line was unscathed. After a penalty or two the ball was turned over and the backs ripped loose again, with Law linking with Bison to set up another score. Johnny then linked with Louis for another score from our own half, despite their impressively mustachioed prop gallantly chasing Louis to the line.
Still Aeroplane didn't roll over and attacked again, only to be hit and turned over by a trio of Badcock, Paff and Smarty, which then set us up for Smarty to pop back up, having made the turnover, and gallop in for another try.
Things really did start to open up a bit now, and Badcock completed the day with a few more scores from free-running rugby from Marshy linking with Bren, who had popped up at crucial link points a number of times.
And that was it - a game that while the scoreline was one-sided, was played in good spirits and even tempered throughout.
