Last gasp conversion strikes the post to see OBs lose

OB's came up against a a very good Whitehall side on Saturday who stopped us playing for 60 minutes.

Whitehall started brightly playing down the slope and looked really threatening ball in hand both centres running incisive lines and causing problems. After 10 minutes one clean break led to the Whitehall winger went over in the corner for an unconverted try

OB's came back and from an attack on the halfway line the ball was spilled gathered by a Whitehall player who ran in unopposed, fly half converted.

Whitehall's line speed closed the OB's attack down this led to a rethink with the forwards attempting to carry the ball more, the conditions however made for a lot of mistakes. When Jack missed an easy penalty in front of the posts and the line out and scrum began to malfunction it looked like a tough day at the office was on the cards.

Shortly after half time things got worse as the Whitehall fly half cut through a gap and scampered in to touch down. Five minutes later another incisive break inside the OB's 22 saw their centre dive in for a 7 pointer.

At 24:0 down there was only one thing to do, up the tempo. With 20 minutes to go the boys turned up the heat as the Whitehall pack began to tire.

With the scrum gaining dominance a series of scrum penalties led to a five metre scrum. Greener had a snipe but was stopped short Wayne picked and scored close in JP converted.

Whitehall worked the ball into the OB's half and picked up a penalty to extend their lead.

OB's came back with vice captain Tom Westray scoring from a break in midfield. Sadly Tom dislocated a shoulder in the act of scoring. JP converted.

With pressure building Whitehall failed to clear their lines and Simon Hunt cut a great line from the left to go in under the posts JP converted.

With 10 minutes to go OBs were now camped in their opponents 22. Whitehall's desperate defence led to their tight head being yellow carded. OB's chose to kick to the corner and were repelled. A second penalty 5m's out led to another kick to the corner as uncontested scrums were now in operation. A catch and drive led to Jon Whiteman scoring wide out. JP lined up the conversion to take the lead struck it well but it drifted out and hit the right hand upright.

With two minutes remaining Whitehall regathered the ball from the restart and were able to see out the game. 26:27 winners.

OB's gained two points from the game and went level on points with third placed Chew Valley who also lost and who OB's play next week.
