North Bristol Ladies v Old Bristolian Ladies
By Cat Rees
4G and snow = perfect rugby conditions...
OBs Ladies made the short journey up the M5 to play North Bristol in somewhat wintery conditions. The 4G pitch was just about playable, even with a layer of snow to add to the fun. The first half saw the home side strong in attack with plenty of aggression at the breakdown. The early pressure was converted into points, with two tries and one conversion. OBs regrouped with a nice passage of play, allowing Ilijana Parojcic to snake her way through the defence and score an unconverted try. North Bristol replied with another unconverted try before half time.
The second half saw a similar amount of pressure from the home side, scoring two more unconverted tries early on. A moment of indiscipline saw each team lose a player to the sin bin, with OBs Ally Stevens given 10 mins to cool off in the snow. This provided OBs with the motivation they needed to go on the attack, the onslaught allowing wing come fullback Amalia Westurland to score a brace of tries, one being converted by Lucy Stone. With both teams tiring, North Bristol inflicted the final damage, scoring two more tries and converting one of them. The final score was 39-17 to the home side.
OBs played well in pretty awful conditions and in the most part remained composed against an aggressive opposition. The team did well, having to match reduced numbers from North Bristol and some players playing out of position. Forward of the match went to Ilijana Parojcic, with back of the match going to Vicky Stevens. A special award went to the Little Terrier Ally Stevens. Whilst she might have got a yellow card, ultimately the smallest player on the pitch stepped in to defend her number 8. Some might say foolish, but others might say purely admirable defending a team mate when needed.
