Minehead Ladies Away
By Cat Rees
Old Bristolians Ladies took a lovely little trip to the seaside for the fifth league game of the season. OBs, unbeaten in the league, were hoping to continue their winning ways against a tough opposition.
OBs arrived at Ellicombe Lane, to be met by both windy conditions and a sloping pitch. Minehead's home advantage soon showed, drawing first blood by attacking from the right wing and scoring within the first 5 minutes. Conversion missed. OBs came back strong in attack and some lovely running lines saw Amy Hickson score to level the teams.
The energy zapping first half saw lots of attacking play from Minehead, exploiting their strength on the right wing and scoring another unconverted try. Some shuffling around in the backs for OBs, saw the defence keep Minehead from scoring anymore points and freed Natalie Kwatia to score with her trademark quick pace and ability to evade tackles. Half time 10-10.
The second half started in a similar vain to the first, with Minehead capitalising on their packs ability to cross the gainline, scoring another unconverted try. Not to be out done, Linzi Rollings decided to show off her strength in attack, smashing through the defence. She was unable to be brought down until she decided to have a little sit down on the half way line. This set up some lovely inter-linking play by OBs, allowing Tori Gilmartin to score with Lucy Stone con-verting.
OBs were in the lead for the first time in the game, which had a positive impact on the next passage of play. Some lovely support play and running angles saw Sirvart Sarafian, score - even if she was a little unsure if she had crossed the right line... Conversion missed. This sparked a resurgence in Minehead, who were back on the attack and were quick to score another try and conversion, leveling the scores again.
OBs were able to call on their reserves to make an impact. Alex Tomczyk made some great headway, twice cutting through the defence like a warm knife through butter (thanks Annie). This teamed with some great support play and offloads allowed Sirvart Sarafian to go over for her second try of the game.
With a few minutes left on the clock, OBs fought hard to keep Minehead at bay. Unfortunately Minehead were too strong and scored a try and conversion in the last minute of the game, taking a win for the home team with the final score 29-27. Forwards of the match were Linzi Rollings and Sirvart Sarafian, with backs of the match going to Alex Tomczyk and Tori Gilmartin.
OBs unbeaten run finally came to an end after a tough day at the office. The ladies now have a few weeks recuperate and train hard before the next league game.
