Club Finances

6 months ago By Old Bristolians

Important information for every club member.

In the last month the club has sadly lost a key sponsor, all this means that monies are tight and we need to try and generate as much income as possible. Please read on to see how you can help.

As your President, I rarely feel the need to communicate to you as a whole, however following last night’s committee meeting, I feel I should express my concerns regarding the club's finances because we had to make some tough calls on what may need to be cut.

So that members understand the issues, it is important that you know the background to the situation. Unlike other rugby clubs, we do not own our facilities. The ground and clubhouse are owned by the Old Bristolians' Society and are both run by the OBs' Sports Club. The Sports Club takes an annual rental from the three sections (Rugby, Hockey & Cricket) and receive all bar revenue. This means that at the beginning of every season, we have to raise approx. £9000 in rental before we break even, which is generally funded by match fees, annual subs and sponsorship generated by the sale of International tickets. Any additional expenditure needs to be covered by fundraising and additional sponsorship.

As a player at the club, you get good facilities, quality coaching, food after home games, physio (1st XV) and discount at Bristol Physio; all of which needs to be paid for. As it stands, we are struggling to afford all of this because we have eaten into our reserves over the last few years. So, I am writing to ask us all to focus on raising as much cash as we can in order to see us through and bolster those reserves.

Annual Subs - have you paid them yet? If yes, then thank you, but ask your team mate if they have. Ask the question “if not why not?” It is all on Pitchero and really simple to do. It is hugely dispiriting to hear that some players are saying they "will pay when they are chased.” So a decision has been made that players who have not paid by December 1st will not be selected, so don’t put yourself (or us) in a difficult position to make that call. If you are a non-playing member then there is £40 membership. Vets members also need to pay.

Sponsorship – we need your help here. Boards around the 1st Team pitch are £300 for the rest of this season. If we sell all the spots, all our troubles go away. Could your business help? Tristan as Chair has offered to oversee this but he could do with some help.

BGS 3G Pitch - We have the opportunity to train and play on this pitch when the weather is poor. This cost needs to be met as it is £50 per hour. We have the chance to raise this money through selling RFU Grand Draw Tickets. So, if you are given these tickets, sell them and it will benefit all of us. They will be with you in the next few weeks. If we are unable to raise cash from this, it won’t happen.

This is not someone else’s problem; it is all of ours. Let’s help our great club get back on its feet by doing our bit.
