An outstanding all-round display sees OBs win the Combination Vase with a 38:3 win over previously undefeated Bristol Saracens.

Old Bristolians rounded off their most successful season with their third Combination Vase win in 6 seasons.

Taking on Bristol Saracens who have had an outstanding season, winning the Gloucester Premier League with an undefeated run was a bit of an unknown. And despite finishing fourth in the league above there was a little uncertainty as to the test that awaited. An open running game was what was expected and both sides delivered. In perfect playing conditions both sides set about throwing the ball around in front of a couple of hundred noisy supporters.

In the first twenty minutes both sides showed nerves. Saracens took an early lead through a penalty goal after 5 minutes. Old Bs came straight back and won several kickable penalties. Sadly Rory Davies was unable to convert the first two but on 18 minutes he landed his third penalty to tie the game up.

On 34 minutes an OBs driving line out into the corner then saw a bizarre yellow card for Kyle Clark. As the maul was driven forward the Saracens 6 jumped on Kyle's back. As Kyle stood up the player went above the horizontal and Clarke got 10.

On 37minutes clean line out ball saw OBs win several phases. The third phase saw fullback Simon Hunt get outside the winger chip the opposing fullback and touch down wide right. The conversion was missed but Rory soon kicked a second penalty to go into half time 11:3 up.

The first half had seen lots dangerous attacks from the Saracens midfield rebuffed by the solid OBs defence and this was the premise of the half time team talk.

The early exchanges of the second half saw Saracens pile on the pressure. Kyle Clarke returned but within a minute Wayne Cockram was binned for a no armed tackle.

The OBs defence still held firm for several phases before David Wright, Saracens 13, stepped his way through to the line only to mysteriously knock the ball on in goal close to the posts. This was to prove a clear turning point.

Saras continued to pressurise but the ball was knocked on in the OBs 22 and Hunty pounced. A massive hand off put him through the defence and then it was a foot race which the ex England 7s star won to score on the left. A change of kicker saw Jack Price convert. 18:3.

A long range penalty from Jack Price extended the lead. 21:3

OBs defence really began to dominate now as Saras were unable to gain ground. A couple of counter rucks and a penalty saw a 5 metre line out. Clean ball and some slick handling put Hunt over for his third try. Price converted. 28:3

Andy Flower who had come on on the left wing then had an opportunity on the left but was dispossessed as he dived for the line.

A further Price penalty was landed before scrum half Andy Green dotted down from a driving maul. Price converted. 38:3

An outstanding performance that ended an excellent season. Best on Ground was the tireless Stu Mac with notable performances from Whiteman, who has now won this trophy three times, Blacker's and Ross.

Tour beckons.
